What is PMUY?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a social welfare scheme launched by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. The objective is to provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to rural and deprived households, replacing traditional fuels like firewood and coal which are harmful to health.

Clean Fuel

Providing LPG cylinders to protect the health of women and children from kitchen smoke.

Financial Support

Government provides financial assistance for the first LPG connection and hot plate (stove).

Environment

Reduces deforestation and indoor air pollution, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Evolution of the Scheme

PMUY 1.0

Launched in 2016. Target was 8 Crore connections. Focused on BPL families based on SECC 2011 data.

PMUY 2.0

Launched in 2021. Introduced special provisions for migrant workers (self-declaration address proof) and additional 1 Crore connections.

PMUY 3.0 (Expansion)

Current ongoing expansion to ensure saturation, targeting households left out in previous phases with continued subsidy support.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a woman above 18 years of age.
  • Must belong to a BPL (Below Poverty Line) household.
  • No other LPG connection should exist in the same household.
  • Category: SC/ST, PMAY (Gramin), AAY, Most Backward Classes (MBC), Tea Garden Tribes, Forest Dwellers.
